Tooth Infection Treatment in Wilmington, DE. Same-Day Relief When It Hurts.

Throbbing pain, swelling, a bad taste or a pimple on the gum are signs of a tooth infection, and it will not heal on its own. Call us for a same-day emergency appointment. Dr. Hina will find the source with digital imaging and get you out of pain, usually by saving the tooth with a gentle root canal.

Signs you may have a tooth infection

  • Constant or throbbing toothache, especially when lying down
  • Swelling in the gum, cheek or jaw
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • A bad taste, or a pimple-like bump on the gum
  • Pain when biting, or a tooth that feels “high”

Go to the ER if…

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, or if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or a high fever. These can be signs of a spreading infection. For everything else, call our Wilmington office first at 302-984-3300.

How we treat it

We start with an exam and digital X-ray, using 3D CBCT imaging when needed, to pinpoint the infected tooth. Treatment usually means one of these:

  • Root canal therapy: removes the infected pulp, disinfects the canals and seals the tooth, so you keep your natural tooth.
  • Draining an abscess and prescribing antibiotics when they are clinically needed.
  • Gentle extraction if the tooth can’t be saved, with options to replace it.

After a root canal, most back teeth need a crown, and many are milled the same day with CEREC.

Root canals aren’t what they used to be

With modern anesthesia and The Wand®, a root canal today feels much like getting a filling. Patients routinely tell us the relief afterward is immediate.
