The Wand® · Wilmington, DE

Painless Dental Injections in Wilmington, DE. The Wand®: Numbing Without the Needle Feeling.

If the shot is the part you dread, you are not alone. At Wilmington Dental & Implants we numb the area with topical gel first, then use The Wand®, a computer-assisted system that delivers anesthetic slowly and steadily through a light, pen-like handpiece. Most patients barely feel it. Nervous about a cleaning? Ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas).

How painless injections work

  1. Topical gel. We numb the surface of the gum first, so you do not feel the tip.
  2. The Wand®. A computer controls the pressure and flow, delivering anesthetic slowly. Fast delivery is what makes ordinary shots sting.
  3. Your pace. We check in, agree on a signal to pause, and only start once you are completely numb.
  4. Gentle treatment. Fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, implants and deep cleanings, all with the same comfortable numbing.

Nervous about the dentist?

Dental anxiety is common, and the needle is the number one reason people put off care. With The Wand, numbing gel, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and a team that never rushes, many patients who avoided the dentist for years find their visit easier than they expected. Tell us when you book and we will plan extra time.

Comfort FAQ

Painless Dentistry Questions

Does Wilmington Dental & Implants use The Wand® for painless injections?+

Yes. Wilmington Dental & Implants uses The Wand®, a computer-assisted anesthesia system, for dental injections. We start with a topical numbing gel, then The Wand delivers the anesthetic slowly at a steady, controlled rate, which is what makes injections far more comfortable.

What is The Wand® dental anesthesia?+

The Wand is a computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system. Instead of a traditional syringe, the dentist uses a light, pen-like handpiece, and a computer controls the pressure and flow of the numbing medicine. Most injection discomfort comes from anesthetic going in too fast; The Wand prevents that.

Does The Wand® really hurt less than a regular dental shot?+

For most patients, yes. Many people feel only light pressure or nothing at all, especially with topical gel first. Everyone is different, so tell us how you feel and we will go at your pace.

Is The Wand® safe?+

Yes. The Wand uses the same local anesthetics dentists have used safely for decades. Only the delivery is different: slower, steadier and more precise.

I'm afraid of needles. Can you still treat me?+

Absolutely. The Wand's handpiece looks like a pen rather than a syringe, and we numb the area with topical gel first. We explain each step, agree on a signal to pause, and never rush. Many of our most anxious patients tell us their injection was the easiest part of the visit.

Do you offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for cleanings?+

Yes. Wilmington Dental & Implants offers nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, for cleanings and other treatment. You breathe it through a small nose mask, feel calm and relaxed within a few minutes, and stay awake the whole time.

Is nitrous oxide safe at the dentist?+

Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the mildest, most widely used forms of dental sedation. It wears off within minutes once the mask is removed and we give you pure oxygen at the end of the visit.

Can I drive home after nitrous oxide?+

Usually, yes. Because nitrous oxide clears so quickly, most adults can drive themselves home. We make sure you feel completely normal before you leave.

Can you put me to sleep for dental work?+

Many patients who ask to be put to sleep find that nitrous oxide (laughing gas) plus The Wand® is all they need: you feel calm and relaxed and do not feel the numbing. You stay awake and can respond, and it wears off in minutes. If you have strong dental anxiety, call 302-984-3300 and we will talk through the comfort options for your treatment.

Are tooth extractions painless?+

With proper numbing they should be. At Wilmington Dental & Implants we use topical gel and The Wand® so the injection is gentle, wait until the area is fully numb, and can add nitrous oxide if you are anxious. You may feel pressure, but not pain.

Do you remove wisdom teeth?+

Yes. Wilmington Dental & Implants removes most wisdom teeth in the office with gentle numbing, and nitrous oxide is available if you would like to feel more relaxed.

Can children have The Wand® injections?+

Yes. The Wand is a good fit for children and teens because it is gentle and does not look like a traditional needle.

Which treatments use The Wand®?+

Any treatment that needs local anesthesia: fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions and wisdom teeth, dental implants and deep cleanings for gum disease.

How long does the numbness last?+

Usually a few hours, depending on the tooth and the treatment. Avoid chewing on the numb side and hot drinks until feeling returns.

Do you offer painless dental care if I don't have insurance?+

Yes. The Wand is part of our normal care. Without insurance, the W Smile Club membership ($579 a year) covers your cleanings, exams, X-rays and emergency visits, and takes 30% off treatment.

Where can I get painless dental injections in Wilmington, DE?+

At Wilmington Dental & Implants. Call 302-984-3300 to book, and mention that you would like extra time and The Wand for your injections.
